Oldest cemetery in mix for history designation

The Old City Cemetery, located on a bluff off South Main, is now in the application
process to be designated a Historic Texas Cemetery.

The application was made by Geri Burnett, chair of the Milam County Historical
Commission. Within the confines of the cemetery are sections used by African-Americans
and Rockdale’s once prominent Jewish community.

A cemetery is eligible for the designation if it is at least 50 years old and has
historical significance.

Subject: Old City Cemetery Wall

The wall and drainage on Mulberry St side of the cemetery is being poured this week. This
will keep the fence from falling and improve the runoff of water down 2nd St which will
allow us to repave it. Chris

Thanks so much to you, Zach, Tommy Doss and anyone else involved in resolving this issue
for those of us who love this old cemetery. I want to pass on this wonderful newspaper
article that Vickie Everhart was kind enough to share with me last year. Even the fence
has an interesting story at OCC!.

Best regards,
Jack Brooks

Considering all the trees and limbs that are down in Old City Cemetery, I think we were fortunate that more headstones weren't damaged. If those 65 dead cedars were not removed three years ago, it might be a different story today.

First three attachments are of the Coffield plot.

Next is my favorite, the Redding Mausoleum. 8076 is a headstone that barely dodged the bullet. 8079 didn't dodge it although it's possible to repair.

In the Jewish Cemetery, Henry Goldsticker, our Jewish CSA veteran and the HTC marker missed a big hit by inches, divine intervention me thinks. 8086, 8088 and 8087.

We drove thru Oaklawn and IOOF and noticed few issues.

Best regards to all,

Jack and Beth Brooks
