No, not the four-legged rural resident, the big iron one behind her. That’s the Sheckles
Bridge, which has been sitting in a field off County Road 429 since a new bridge over the
San Gabriel River was built in 2003-04.
Rockdale City Manager Chris Whittaker plans to bring both the Sheckles Bridge and the
North Milam Galbreath Bridge, county Road 240 at Big Elm Creek, to Rockdale.
Current plans call for them to be placed in a new park to be constructed on scenic city-
owned land on the south side of US 79 west of the Southwest Milam Water Supply office.
Whittaker requested transfer of ownership at a recent county commissioner session.
Volunteers will begin work on clearing the Galbreath Bridge on Saturday. The Milam County
Historical Commission is supporting the effort.
