This is the start of some “musical chairs” involving historic Milano buildings.
Joe Hairston (L) and Bobby Weatherspoon are preparing the soon-to-be former Post Oak
Savannah Groundwater Conservation headquarters to be moved across US 79 to a location
next door to the Milano Fire Station-Shelter.
That POSGCD building has a large role in Milano history. It was the passenger depot
ticket room for many decades prior to being moved from downtown in the 1950s.
“Every man who left the county during World War II to join the military caught the train
at this depot,” Hairston said.
Once the former depot is moved, the new POSGCD headquarters will be another Milano
structure, the former pre-K and kindergarten building from Milano Elementary School.
That building is being replaced as part of a bond issue to construct a junior-high,
agriculture building and elementary cafeteria-classroom wing.
