Cemetery work topic for Crown Gardeners

Crown Garden Club held its August meeting at the home of Patricia McKee with Rene
Pounders as co-hostess.
Thirteen members and two guests were present.
The program was given by Beth Guillote and Jack Brooks on their interest in cleaning and
renewing old cemeteries, including Rockdale’s Old City Cemetery which is one of the
club’s projects for the year.
Mrs. Brooks grew up in the Sharp-Tracy area and graduated from Rockdale High School in
1969. They first discovered the San Andres Cemetery near Tracy in 2005 and that was the
beginning of their interest in cemetery make-overs.
They displayed photos of some of their work and shared interesting stories of buried
tombstones and other things they had found that were in disrepair. “Their work is ongoing
and they have been a tremendous help to the club in the work they have done at the Old
City Cemetery,” said Yvonne Yount, club president.
The gazebo at the cemetery is now installed at the eastern edge and the work is nearing
completion, thanks to many volunteers who have helped. The group is considering a plaque
to put on the gazebo.
In other business, the club voted to purchase a concrete bench and a few decorations to
add to the modernizing of the city swimming pool.
The hostesses served refreshments and door prizes were won by Betty Bartlett and Yvonne
Yount.
