Men in 1947 Photo Represent Town History

This photo is the men’s Bible class at First Christian Church of Rockdale, taken on March 30, 1947.
The photo was taken on the front steps of the second FCC church building which faced Scarbrough Street at Bell Avenue downtown.
A dozen years later, the old church gave way to the current huge Colonial-style structure which occupies half of the downtown block between Scarbrough and Burleson streets and fronts West Bell Avenue. The current structure was dedicated in 1959.
Some of these people, members of “The Greatest Generation,” were not far removed from their World War II duty in 1947 when this photo was made. And many were instrumental in the building of the current church.
Many descendants remain. Many are remembered for their various roles in Rockdale’s bustling business community in the post-war, pre-Alcoa days when Saturday was a business day that started early, ended late, with parking allowed down the middle of US 79 and down the middle of Main Street, as well as the angle parking at the curbs.
Minister in 1947 was L.C. Fraim and Bible class teacher was H.D. “Farmer” Maxwell, RHS voc-ag teacher and later principal.
This photo was submitted to The Reporter by Rockdale native Bruce Holliman of San Antonio. With the help of Hal and Willyne Stanislaw, Vickie Pounders Everheart and Mary Lou Summers Hickling, the entire group was identified as follows:
