Milam County, TX Hanging Stone Plaque
                                       WHAT IS IT?

Milam County historians have so far been unable to find any information
on this grim sandstone-bas relief sculpture, found four years ago near Rockdale and
publicized for the first time last week. It depicts a triple hanging.

There aren’t known records of any triple hangings in Milam County history.

Indeed the county’s most famous hanging, a 1911 lynching which followed the death of a
Thorndale man, was from a utility pole, not a tree. A tree outside the Milam County
Courthouse was said to be site of at least one hanging shortly after the turn of the
century. Age of the sculpture is not known.

Attached is a photo of a recent interesting find here in Rockdale (actually, probably
Milam County just outside of Rockdale).

It is a sandstone plaque which was found on privately owned property.  We really do not
know anything about it.  We have been unable to find  any record of a triple hanging
anywhere in Milam County.  Maybe it was not reported or maybe it did not occur at all.

The plaque is in the possession of a Bell County commissioner.

There is some faint writing "olph" and possibly the word "pearl"
