This past week in commissioner’s court we recognized the Milam County Historical Commission with a Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Historical Commission in recognition for their outstanding work in Milam County in 2013.

Delores Mode, long time member of that group, accepted the award with other members including Geri Burnett and Dr. Lucile Estell also being present.

Recently these two spearheaded the dedication ceremony of the newly restored Worley Bridge out at Apache Pass with Geri doing an outstanding job as mistress-of-ceremony and Dr. Estell presenting an historical account of the bridge and associated historical sites in the surrounding area.

We’ve become so accustomed to their arranging such events we tend to take them for granted, but on behalf of all the citizens of Milam County I want to thank you and the Milam County Historical Commission for all the outstanding work you do in leading our historical preservation activities.

You make us proud, you’ve brought us recognition throughout the state and nationally as well.

But most of all you’ve made it possible for us to have all these first class historical sites, markers, and events right here in Milam County.

At the Worley Bridge Historical Commission does county proud dedication event I chanced to meet Gary and Sue Bruton who have recently returned to the county and have undertaken a project whereby they’re restoring an old abandoned cemetery near FM 486 and CR 210 where they have discovered the graves of two members of the original Austin Colony of 300 settlers that came to Texas in the early 1800’s.

The discovery of Milam County’s historical past continues.
