Sunday will mark another victory in historic preservation in Milam County when the 103-year-old Worley Bridge spanning the San Gabriel River on County Road 428 officially reopens to traffic.

The event will be marked with a short ceremony sponsored by the Milam County Historical Commission, according to an announcement by Johnnielyn Brown, the group’s chair.

The bridge crosses the San Gabriel River near historic Apache Pass. Its renovation began three years ago by the Texas Department of Transportation.

The rededication ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. with the posting of the colors and pledges to the flags led by Rockdale VFW Post 6525.

Denice Doss will sing the Star Spangled Banner. An opening prayer will be led by Pastor James Brymer, a member of the Milam County Historical Commission.

Guests will be introduced by Geri Burnett, former chair and current vice chair of the Milam County Historical Commission.

Dr. Lucile Estell, a member of the Milam County Historical Commission and board member of El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail, will present a brief history of the bridge.

Apache Pass owner Kit Worley and Milam County Commissioner Jeff Muegge will cut the ribbon. Refreshments will be served.

County Road 428 is off FM 908, approximately 11 miles south of Rockdale.
