Historical Commission Has Extra Funds for Preservation
                          Rockdale Reporter - December 12, 2013

The Milam County Historical Commission has available funds to use for historic preservation in Milam County, according to an announcement by Preservation Grant Chairperson Geri Burnett.

“We have approximately $11,000 pledged by Milam County, the City of Rockdale, several citizens from Gause, City of Thorndale and City of Buckholts to address preservation needs in Milam County. As a county, we are unique in this and we appreciate the support which these entities have pledged to this project,” said Burnett. “It is a unique program.”

Burnett noted that this is the sixth year for the program to operate.

“We have been able to fund a total of $11,000 to $15,000 each year,” she said. “Since these are matching grants, this means that Milam County received double this amount in historic preservation work. One hundred per cent return is quite a bargain. We are convinced that it is a solid program which should continue.”

Applications are open to 501- C-3 organizations and other non-profit organizations. Certified local governments may also apply. Funds may be used to restore and repair historic structures and for other preservation related activities.

Grantees will be chosen by a grant selection committee from the Milam County Historical Association.

Application forms and complete guidelines may be picked up at the office of County Judge Dave Barkemeyer, the Milam County Museum, and at Rainbow Courts in Rockdale. Also, complete applications and guidelines are available at www.milamcountyhistoricalcommission.org

Applications are due by Jan. 3. Applications will not be accepted after this date.

Persons with questions should contact Burnett at 512-446-5087.
