They Helped Keep the Coal Moving, the Juice Flowing

When Alcoa was sold on the idea of building an aluminum smelter fired by lignite power in 1950, another company was also created.
It was Industrial Generating Company (IGC), a subsidiary of Texas Power & Light Company. TP&L was a forerunner to Texas Utilities, among some other name changes, but IGC was formed to operate the lignite mining operation and the power plant for Alcoa, which built, and owned, all the facilities.
Alcoa and IGC’s marriage was a new adventure and lasted for decades.
This photo was brought to my desk recently by Eleanor Luckey of our town, and she provided the photo IDs too. Eleanor is pictured seated at the far right.
The photo is of the women members of the IGC office staff who held down a variety of responsibilities in helping the big effort of mining our abundant lignite coal at the Sandow Mine and keeping the power flowing in the huge generating units.
These ladies are (seated L-R) Jo Ann Rychlik, Ruth Haney, Peggy White Seelig and Eleanor Luckey; standing (L-R) Elizabeth Doss, Lillian Laurence, Shirley Becker, Nancy Perry and Margaret Moore.
After 56 years of continuous operation, Alcoa closed its smelter in 2008-09. IGC no longer exists as a business entity, but thankfully Luminant continues the coal mining and power producing operations here.
