Historian to write final newspaper column next week

Editor’s note: Joy Graham, who has written a weekly Milam History column for the past 17 years,
has announced next week’s (Oct. 3) will be her last. Mrs. Graham said she will work on other projects.
Organized festivals across the county draw people to our cities and communities.
Buckholts sponsors the Cotton Festival, Cameron’s Arts and Crafts Festival is Oct. 5, Gause has Founders Day, Milano has monthly third Saturday country music event, Rockdale has Tejas Festival in March, national longhorn show in April, homecoming in June, garage sales and Kay Fun Run in September and fair 3rd weekend in October.
Thorndale has a car and quilt show in April, BBQ Cookoff, baseball, arts and craft, and dances and the homecoming in October.
Most cities in the county celebrate Christmas with a town gathering and parade.
Our county has a national trail with two routes that cross the county, east to west,
and history that dates back to the 1600’s. What possibilities do you perceive in the
county’s future?
Cameron has the second oldest school building in the state just behind the Alamo. The history of the cities of Cameron and Rockdale hold many untold stories of this county.
The smaller towns and Gause have historic buildings, cemeteries, churches, that are literally versed in Milam County “sense of place.”
Milam County Genealogy Society and Rockdale Historical Society are vested in protecting history.
They are recognized in the state and the Historical Society is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places.
I once attended a Chamber of Commerce banquet in Rockdale where Louis Austin, chairman
of Texas Power & Light, spoke to the audience, summing upon with this:
“If it is to be, it’s up to me!” What do you have to contribute?
I leave you with this, It takes the sum of the whole county to make a difference
I’ve enjoyed covering Milam County History that began in 1996 as the Courthouse was
being restored. That’s 17 years.
