What does it take to have a “sense of place” in Milam County? Here are a few suggestions.

In 1936 Milam County celebrated its centennial when the state placed centennial markers throughout the state.

Three markers were placed in the San Gabriel Community at the sites where three missions were located in the mid 1700’s.

Mission San Xavier on FM 908 was correctly marked on the north side of FM 908 and both Mission Ildefonso and Mission de Candelaria were marked in locations that were found to be incorrect and were relocated in 2012.

Mission Ildefonso was moved to CR 429 and Mission de Candelaria to CR 432.

This area is referred to as San Xavier Mission Complex that also includes Apache Pass river crossing and the site of the Presidio.

Sugarloaf Mountain is also part of this National Trail and will dedicate a Texas Historical Commission Marker in 2013. It is located on CR 264 in the Gause area.

In the past there were 27 historic bridges across the county. They crossed the Little and San Gabriel Rivers, and the following creeks: Briary, Walkers, Big Elm, Small Creek and Alligator Creek.

Two bridges were restored east of Thorndale. one on CR 440 (now moved to Ledbetter Park in Cameron) and Henderson Bridge CR 443 (moved to the intersection of FM 487 and Mill Street in Rockdale).

Faubian Bridge over Little River on CR 262 is restored, and Worley Bridge at Apache Pass is currently under restoration.

Milam County’s rural schools were administered under a county superintendent. The rural schools were closed when the schools consolidated with school districts in Buckholts, Cameron, Milano, Rockdale, Gause, Thorndale and St. Paul Lutheran School, grades K-8. Rosenwald School Building, located in Davilla, currently belongs to Hill-Fontaine-Shelby Foundation and is under restoration.

Local county authors have published Milam County books, which are located in Cameron and Rockdale city libraries.

By now you should begin to see how a county so rich in the history- making events in Texas might be the place for many researchers to spend time.

Genealogists frequent Milam County for family histories, deed research, and now are beginning to come to see and ride the National Trail through the county.
