Rockdale’s Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library was the setting Thursday for an El Camino Real National Historic Trail Association board meeting.

Dr. Lucile Estell of Rockdale is president of the board.

“The board includes 15 members from all over the trail area, which stretches from western Louisiana to the Rio Grande,” Dr. Estell said. “We have voted to have all our meetings in Rockdale because they all appreciate the wonderful facilities for staying here and for meeting.”

Joy Graham of Rockdale is also a board member.

The El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail is one of 19 such-designated trails in the United States and is administered by the National Park Service.

Milam is the first county along the trail to have signs designating the trail. Some signs are placed at the actual sites where the trail crosses modern-day roads but most designate a driving trail designed to give sight-seers a taste of what the landscape looked like in the 18th Century.

Markers along the driving trail delineate the sites of three 18th Century Spanish missions.

“The board’s responsibility is to develop the trail and protect its historical integrity,” Dr Estell said.

During Thursday’s session, the board designated the site Apache Pass and the members of the Kit Worley Family as the association’s first-ever honorary members.
