                     Rockdale’s Estell Gets ‘Historic’ Award from DAR

The Texas Society, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution honored Dr. Lucile Estell of Rockdale at their noon luncheon “ Celebrating Historic Preservation” Friday in Houston.

Dr. Estell was nominated by Three Missions Chapter, Milam County, by Chapter Regent: Lue Wetzel. Martha Ann Hartzog presented her with the Historic Preservation Medal.

Dr. Estell addressed the group: “Receiving this award is a great honor. I appreciate and value it because it places a favorable light on a place I love very much, Milam County.

“Historic preservation is so important to the very survival of our nation. All of us know that freedom is not free. It must be earned by every generation.

“Our understanding and appreciation for our national heritage is vital to the future of our nation.

“When I retired I had never considered that one day we might be in the middle of the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Trail. I am reminded what Mordecai said to Esther: ‘Perhaps it was for this purpose, I was placed here at this time’.”

Dr. Estell served the Milam County Historical Commission as Chairman for four years 2005-2008, Milam County Certified Local Government Committee for six years, is on the Milam County Historical Ccommission and Milam County Certified Local Government Committees.

She was instrumental in organizing Milam County Historical Commission’s Preservation Trust Fund. In 2007 she served on the Task Force to organize Texas Board of Directors for El Camino Real de los Tejas in conjunction with the National Parks Service.

She is currently serving as president of the state board of directors in cooperation with National Parks Service in Santa Fe New Mexico.

Milam residents attending with Dr. Estell were Denice Doss, Lue Wetzel, Lee Riding, Carolyn Temple, and Joy Graham.

Ken and Betty Harris of Dallas and Seph Harris of Houston, nephews of Dr. Estell and Executive Director of El Camino Real de los Tejas Steven Gonzales of Austin were also present. Yes, Dr. Estell, you were in the right place at the right time to honor your county and your state by giving of your services for generations to come.
