In the 1950's there was an unimproved road going south out of Cameron, crossed Little River, and connected to Hwy 77. Current maps don't show that road. I was looking for a map in that time period. I was really interested in the bridge. There is an interesting site, Bridgehunter.com that doesn't show it.

Charles,

We recently received our Historic Bridges of Milam County book from the printers. Your interests are on pages 64-72 dealing with the McCown Bridge. Please see this website for additional information on the Turnham Bluff community and cemetery.

During our earlier telephone conversation, I mentioned that the Little River had changed course and now runs about a 1000' north of its old Turnham Bluff bank. That is the story of Little River as well as the Brazos. The soft sandy banks and serpentine paths allows the river to seek a more direct route during flooding.

if you'll note the map enclosed with the "Bridges" book, you'll see where I've marked it showing generally where the Little River and McCown Bridge used to be.

I hope that you enjoy the book when you receive it.

Best regards,

Jack Brooks

Charles,

That would be very kind and generous of you but I don't want you to feel obligated because of my sending you the book. It was a pleasure to do the same since you showed such a genuine interest in the history of the McCown Bridge and of the adjacent Turnham McCown community.

Should you still care to send a donation toward our Milam County Historical Commission, Historic Preservation Fund, which has completed over $190,000 worth of preservation work over the past eight years, the address is as follows:

Mrs. Lynn Young MCHC Chairperson
Attn.  MCHC Preservation Fund
1142 County Road  412B
Rockdale, TX.  76567

Charles, it has been a pleasure corresponding with you and I hope that you have the opportunity to visit Milam County again in the near future.

Sincerely,
Jack Brooks

I received the book and greatly appreciate it. I would like to make a small donation to MCHC, but don't have an address.
