At the age of 31 in 1884, Cuthbert Sewell Slocomb of Onancock, Va traveled to Cameron, Texas at the invitation of a cousin. Cuthbert apparently liked the Cameron, Texas area as he stayed for several years. There is no indication that prior to Texas Cuthbert had any knowledge of photography but must have quickly taken up the occupation. A ledger indicates by late 1886 he had returned to Onancock, Va to help run the family's general mercantile store when his brother became ill but was apparently very busy during his time in Texas.
Cuthbert Sewell Slocomb was my great-grandfather and my father, now 92, has many pictures and several notepads from his time in Texas. The pictures have either C.S. Slocomb Photographer, Cameron, Texas or from Slocomb & Kidd's Photograph Gallery, Cor. Cameron and Ackerman Streets, Rockdale, Texas.
A small notepad that we still have includes his handwritten instructions for photography and customer notes. We do not know if Mr. Kidd got him into photography of if he started his own business and later joined with Kidd. What I do know is we have many photos that we would like to share with Texas. We know C.S. Slocomb was active at Wootan Wells but most of the photos have no indication of the subject. I have tried to email a sample of the pictures to milamcountyhistoricalcommission.org but will not accept email. If you can provide a good email I can send a sample of the pictures.
