Editor’s note: This is the third article in the sixth series of “On the Other Side of the Tracks,” a Black History Month series by former Rockdale resident, and longtime teacher, Susie Sansom-Piper

Here are more organizations who played a big role in the community life in Rockdale’s “other side of the tracks.”

Modernistic Club

The Modernistic Club was organized in 1975 with an initial membership of 25 women.

Objective of the club is “to promote a friendly community atmosphere, using the motto… God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

The club song is “Soul Serenade”; club flower, red carnations, and colors are crimson and white.

The first elected officers were Georgia Richards, president; Carolyn Williams, vice president; Jo Ann Bradford, secretary; Clara Brooks, treasurer; Doris Phillips, financial projects; Pearl Mack, community projects; Annie Bell Wesley, social functions and Marie Ellison, publicity.

Through the years, many others have served in various capacities.

Each year, the club presents the Minnie Ola Jones Scholarship, which was established in 1982 in memory of Club member Mineola Jones.

The organization also renders community service through contributions to many other charitable institutions.

Original Twelve Social and Civic Club

The Original Twelve Social and Civic Club, Inc. was organized in 1986, and incorporated in 1995.

Founding members included Leroy Tindle, Leroy Phillips, Garry White, Lon Williams, Charles Alonzo, Ocie Bowes, Ray Brown, Charles Embra, John Robertson and M. C. White.

This club is a Community Service Organization that has provided assistance to fire victims, Christmas Roundup, needed Medical Assistance; to Rockdale ISD to benefit needy students (cheerleader uniforms, school supplies, T-shirts for ball teams).

Also, Eastside Tutoring Program, Project Graduation Senior Program, Eastside Tutoring Mentor Program; Eastside Scholarship Fund: City of Rockdale Organizations, Chamber of Commerce, Fair Association, Senior Citizens Center, Police Department Officer of the year, athletic programs in general, Milam County Child Welfare Board, Milam County Livestock Show, Texas Stars youth track teams, and other community services as needed.
