Historic New marker dedications will bring total in Milam County to 107

There will be Texas Historical Marker dedications in Rockdale and Cameron the next two Saturdays.
A marker will be dedicated at Cameron’s Wilson-Ledbetter Park this Saturday at 10 a.m. At 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, the scene shifts to Rockdale’s Rainbow Courts.
Is this a big deal? Emphatically, yes.
The Texas Historical Commission grants such markers—you’ve seen them, they’re as familiar as bluebonnets among Texas roads—only to places where something of historic and/or long-lasting significance can be documented to have happened.
We like to call Milam County “historic.” The number of markers which grace our little corner of the world prove that.
It might come as a surprise to learn there are currently 105 of the prized markers in our county and in a couple of weeks that total will grow to 107.
Twenty-three communities in Milam have at least one marker. While many are in Rockdale and Cameron, our smaller communities are certainly not neglected.
Gause, for instance has nine markers, there are eight in Maysfield and five in Buckholts. Rockdale has 17. Our town has a wide diversity of historic commemorations. We have historical markers at the site of a railroad depot, a hotel that was destroyed by fire, our library, a theater, former city hall, a former school, homes, several cemeteries and churches.
One Rockdale historical marker has been removed. That was at the site of the old Lockett House, corner of Ackerman and Bell. It was removed in the early 1980s when the house itself was relocated to a rural location.
